    A letter from our Pastor… August 2021

    Letter from the Pastor:

They shall hunger no more, neither thirst anymore; the sun shall not strike them, nor any scorching heat. - Revelation 7:16

As one of our members has reminded me, we have entered into the dog days of summer. Now I always heard this phrase and understood that it is a way of designating the hottest part of the summer. But if I am honest, I never fully understood what it meant or why we call them “dog days.” Maybe you are like me and the phrase brings to mind a dog laying under a tree in the heat of the day, panting from how hot it is. Or maybe we just thought it had to do with the number of hot dogs that we grill this time of year. I learned that it actually has to do with the position of the sun in conjunction to the constellation Canis Major or the “great dog.” I personally like the dog under the tree explanation better. But no matter the origin or meaning of the phrase, we know that this time of the year (especially in Eastern Carolina) is going to be hot!

With a family that loves to be outside, this is particularly hard for Megan and me as we struggle to find something safe to do. The heat of the summer can quickly lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. The dog days heat could be a cause for complaining and grumbling about how hot it is. But as believers, I think we should use the heat as a reminder of Revelation 7:16: “They shall hunger no more, neither thirst anymore; the sun shall not strike them, nor any scorching heat.” One day, we will no longer endure the dog days of summer nor anything that is a result of a broken and sinful world, but will enter into the joy of the Lord. So next time you think about complaining about the heat, remember the joy that we will have one day and hope in the promises of God.
